Witch Child by Celia Rees6/29/2023 “A rollocking tale of slavery, sisterhood, blackhearted bridegrooms and, of course, treasure. The Amazonian Minerva is a splendid figure.” - Jan Mark, TES “The story is absorbing, full of surprises, moving and revealing. “Well-known for her ability to write gripping stories featuring strong, intelligent female characters, Celia Rees has yet another compelling read in Pirates! The relationship between the two gutsy girls is particularly well drawn and details of primitive amputation techniques, scurvy-rotten gums and the Pirate Code give a vivid impression of life at the end of the golden age of piracy.” - Financial Times This is as swashbuckling a yarn as anyone could wish for.” - Adele Geras, The Guardian Bloomsbury’s characteristically stylish cover will appeal more to girls, but the title alone might draw boys to pick this one off the shelf. Rees is good at both landscape and seascape, and her lovers are touching without being sentimental. The book ends with happiness, hope and a delightful revelation. Many adventures ensue, of the kind that fans of this genre will love to read about. Bartolome the Brazilian, who is a terrific baddy and worth his weight in gold as far as this narrative is concerned. Her research is skilfully concealed so that the story reaches us clear and true, untarnished by any olde-worlde fustiness. “piracy is definitely in… Celia Rees is very good at reimagining the past in a way that doesn’t reduce it but which at the same time is devoid of the pishtushery that sometimes blights historical novels.

The death cure book6/29/2023 Newts descent scares me, really, and his one wish for Thomas to kill him hurts so much. Telling us that half the world has gone crazy because of a man-made disease is one thing, but showing someone we’ve walked with since book 1 one go so crazy they aim something worse than a gun at you with serious intent to kill in their eyes is another. I couldn’t even finish the last book I was reading because my attention was lassoed by this one. It was this that made me realise my cruel taste for people trapped in confined spaces for long periods of time, and watching Thomas narrowly avoid insanity for the first chapter or two was so entertaining. But to backtrack a bit, this book has such a brilliant opening. And despite the fact that all they’ve wanted was their memories since the very beginning, they refuse when Wicked offers it to them, and instead break out of Wicked headquarters epic prison break style, flee to one of the last remaining cities, and engage in a series of goals, each of which Dashner manages to make more urgent than the last, including getting the chips in their heads removed (which can track and control them), meeting Gally, who Thomas thought was dead back in book ONE, and breaking Newt out of crazy people jail. In the finale of the absolutely thrilling Maze Runner series, Thomas, Minho, Newt, and like SIX out of the original hundred or so Gladers find themselves in Wicked’s headquarters. Books don’t get much more intense than this. Blakely finds herself at the Auction whilst trying to escape her fathers men who had been chasing her. Riggs has always been intrigued with Blakely and decides to bid for her for a year instead of the usual month - is this because of his need for revenge or a thirst for something else? Riggs starts to plan his revenge which is given an unexpected boost when Blakely accidentally finds herself on the stage at a charity auction. Pride and prejudice author6/29/2023 I love how Sonali Dev tackles all of Jane Austen’s classics in her Raje family series, starting off with this Pride and Prejudice retelling. And then he discovers that she’s the only surgeon who can save his sister’s life.Īs the two clash, their assumptions crumble like the spun sugar on one of DJ’s stunning desserts. Up-and-coming chef DJ Caine has known people like Trisha before, people who judge him by his rough beginnings and place pedigree above character. But that’s not enough for the Rajes, her influential immigrant family. Trisha Raje is San Francisco’s most acclaimed neurosurgeon. City of saints and madmen6/29/2023 The style was clever, but the story wasn’t as enjoyable as the first one. The footnotes made me laugh, but it was kind of irritating to go back and forth between text and footnotes. ‘The Hoegbotton Guide to the Early History of Ambergris’ - This was slightly drier, masquerading as a sort of history pamphlet. The ending was weird, and clever, but also kind of predictable. It was also the most straightforward short story - not masquerading as anything else. I kind of felt overwhelmed, a bit thrown in at the deep end, but I did like the descriptions. ‘Dradin, In Love’ - This one was richest in very visual descriptions of the city. Ignoring the appendix, there are four stories: The writing and descriptions are quite rich, and you build up a very clear mental image of this city. It’s an interesting collection of stories with all kinds of different tones and styles and genres, even, all centred around the fictional city of Ambergris. I felt the cities were characters in both books - more clearly so in this book, where there’s no single recurring, central character. The comparisons between Perdido Street Station and this book are obvious. The… bittiness annoys me: I do like short stories/novellas, but this isn’t the easiest collection to read. I intend to finish it some day, but it’s not the kind of book I feel like I can sit down and just blitz on through. City of Saints and Madmen, Jeff VanderMeerĬonfession: I didn’t actually read all of the appendix of this. Honeytrap aster glenn gray6/28/2023 This is a much more wholesome image than “joint,” since a pop stand would not be serving alcohol. “Let’s blow this joint” becomes “let’s blow this pop stand,” where “pop” means a sweet carbonated beverage.Ī pop stand is a soda fountain a soda fountain is a machine that mixes carbonated water and flavored syrup, but in the mid-20th century, it was also a name for the kind of establishment where you might find such a machine, like a diner or an ice cream parlor or a drugstore. It’s a much older word than I would have thought the OED’s first citation is from 1821. “Joint” is also chiefly US, and it means a gathering place, perhaps especially a place where you might do something illicit like drink or smoke opium. Or possibly in the case of “let’s blow this joint,” a sense of… explosions? I think as a kid, I heard this phrase and had no idea what it meant, so I understood “blow” as “blow up.” You would vacate a place pretty suddenly if it blew up. This expression is primarily used by US speakers and it originates in the 20th century as “let’s blow this joint.” The OED does list depart, leave, or vacate, especially suddenly, as meanings of “blow,” and it’s right after “blow in” meaning to arrive suddenly, so I guess there is a sense of being carried by the wind. Why does “blow” mean “leave”? Where are all these popsicle stands and why are people leaving them? Since I left Substack this week, I was thinking about expressions people use when they’re leaving a place, and I landed on “let’s blow this popsicle stand” as a particularly puzzling one.
