The death cure book6/29/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Newts descent scares me, really, and his one wish for Thomas to kill him hurts so much. Telling us that half the world has gone crazy because of a man-made disease is one thing, but showing someone we’ve walked with since book 1 one go so crazy they aim something worse than a gun at you with serious intent to kill in their eyes is another. ![]() I couldn’t even finish the last book I was reading because my attention was lassoed by this one. It was this that made me realise my cruel taste for people trapped in confined spaces for long periods of time, and watching Thomas narrowly avoid insanity for the first chapter or two was so entertaining. ![]() But to backtrack a bit, this book has such a brilliant opening. And despite the fact that all they’ve wanted was their memories since the very beginning, they refuse when Wicked offers it to them, and instead break out of Wicked headquarters epic prison break style, flee to one of the last remaining cities, and engage in a series of goals, each of which Dashner manages to make more urgent than the last, including getting the chips in their heads removed (which can track and control them), meeting Gally, who Thomas thought was dead back in book ONE, and breaking Newt out of crazy people jail. In the finale of the absolutely thrilling Maze Runner series, Thomas, Minho, Newt, and like SIX out of the original hundred or so Gladers find themselves in Wicked’s headquarters. Books don’t get much more intense than this. ![]()
